Khao Sok: Sleeping on a Lake of Emerald

TTWU Travel Team July 20, 2026

Cheow Lan Lake is older than the Amazon rainforest. Here's what a night on its floating raft houses is really like.

An Ancient Forest

Khao Sok National Park is one of the oldest rainforests on earth — older, some say, than the Amazon. Its centerpiece is Cheow Lan Lake, a vast emerald expanse ringed by limestone peaks.

The Raft Houses

Floating bamboo raft houses let you wake to mist on the water and the calls of gibbons. There's no road in — only the longtail boats.

What You'll Do

  • Dawn wildlife safari by boat
  • Jungle trek to a limestone cave
  • Swimming and kayaking off the raft
  • Thai meals cooked on the water

Practical Notes

The 2-day, 1-night itinerary is the sweet spot. It includes the national park fee, meals, guide, and transfers. Bring insect repellent and a light layer — evenings on the lake are cool.

Khao Sok is the Thailand most travelers never see. Go before the secret gets out.
